The anticipated Oscars will be tonight. I can’t wait and will be taking my seat on the couch again. So, if anyone is taking roll (my grandparents, my aunt, my dad)…here, present…I will be seated on the couch for your posterity.
There’s a member of the family who has been nominated over the years…and won! If he reads this, I want him to know we are so proud of him. We are proud of his work not compromising his parents, siblings, grandparents or great-grandparents. It is a difficult road to reach such heights. He has sacrificed a lot. We admire his perseverance, sensibilities, yes – his self-effacing manner and his talent.
I love the awards show and quite frankly am humbled that while we sit and watch from the sofa and he deservedly has walked the red carpet, he has done all the work to make the show(s) even more meaningful to family. We are in awe of his accomplishments and although he is not nominated this year, we are following him, watching and knowing it’s a matter of time until he receives another nomination whether it be a Golden Globe or Oscar.
His grace and talent in screenwriting stand out. In the Washington Post, June 17, 2010 he generously acknowledged that in one collaborative project, “… there’s no way I could have written this by myself…. I’m just one guy on a large team. There is so much manpower and brainpower applied to these scripts — it’s like working for NASA…” And, TWP added this about his own individual efforts: “He delivers humor and heart with a canny knack for audience connection.” Yes, I will be sitting from the couch and I thank him for transporting us to his world, a world in film I can recognize. Click to find out about the inception of one of his characters, one the whole family can identify. I love what he shares here; click on minute 7:30 to hear his explanation. More “>explanation here.
Click on this link to meet him, a down to earth genuine soul.
In addition he is inspiring family members, making a difference for his audience just through his sensitive development of characters, his talent and courage in taking on a project that looms large and handling it with class. He has some notable sequels on the burner as I write this. Stay tuned next year.

In an fb post he commented “…thanks for the invite to the farm…”
Anytime. You can take the driver’s seat of the gator whenever which would be every bit as fun– if not more– as my seat from the couch.

How exciting that must be for your family, Georgette! It’s easy to see why you would be so fond of the Oscar award show. Enjoy!
I’m at my mother’s having spent the night. She was so sure the Oscars were Saturday night until I brought it up on the computer to show her they are Sunday night. She doesn’t want to miss them either. Cute!
Now you have given me more of an interest to watch this year..( no Movie going lately) “Little Miss Sunshine” has my attention now, so now, I have to see the ending, and sure hope grandpa gets out soon!!!!!!! Yes, how wonderful for your family……Enjoy my frind….
He’s not up this year or last…but we certainly pay attention to the screenwriter nods. His dance card is very full and it’s a matter of time before he is nominated again. You have to watch the commentary of LMS after you watch the movie…he talks about family there.
ah geezs…so sorry..I knew I shouldn’t of said anything until I had coffee……better re-read…..
No worries…we’re watching even though he’s not up.
What a wonderful story – in itself, and for your family. I have another blogging friend whose grandfather won an Oscar for his scoring of the film “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, among others. They pass the Oscar around on a rotating basis – each of his children gets to keep it a certain portion of the year. The last time I heard, it was sitting on Karen’s mother’s piano.
Personal connections like that certainly do humanize events like the Oscars. And inspiring stories like this certainly are encouraging to (ahem) people who maybe have been a little too casual about their work!
Exactly…they humanize and personalize events. Perhaps there would be less criticism and more building up of others if folks just had a human connection to events or situations. One would be less apt to criticize if they realize the bigger picture in being connected.
I hope you can find a minute or two to click on the 7:30 point clip — just listen to his excitement as he retells the creation of Spanish Buzz! When he slams his hand down, I see my grandfather, my father and uncles.
Love the “rotating Oscar” story. Karen’s mother has to be proud! What a great way to share with the family!!!
I usually know the Oscars are imminent for weeks in advance thanks to Anthony, but our thoughts have been other places for the last few weeks. I was startled when a radio announcer started speculating about “this weekend’s Oscar winners” yesterday.
What’s funny about reading this particular post is that Anthony I just rewatched Little Miss Sunshine a couple of weeks ago. We’ve watched Toy Story 3 even more recently, on account of the little guy liking “the one with the bear.” So sweet in light of this to read your words of love and support to a man essential to both movies’ making!
What a coincidence that you have watched both recently.
I smiled when I read about how much you enjoyed “Hunger Games”. When you wrote that post, he was in talks to do the sequel…”Hunger Games: Catching Fire” but I was afraid to say anything…shh…nada…as I didn’t want to jinx it…as if I could… You’ve got to watch the 7:30 minute clip where he describes the moment they came up with Spanish Buzz! I love the excitement in his telling. I think you would enjoy his telling of it.
So cool, Georgette! And I’m sure you’re right. With writing of that quality he will be there again. And it gives us all a shot in the arm, too!
Google his other projects in the making. Yes, it’s just a matter of time…if not this year, next year or the next. These things don’t happen over night. LMS was 10 years in the making, for example.
LOL…I remember family members talking about this script he had written, LMS…I immediately made a connection between the title and my aunt…truly a ray of sunshine in all our lives… (his grandmother) and thought…oh no….Hollywood wants another story…little did I know how off base I was. Were my eyes ever opened when I saw his interpretation of LMS. Humanizing premise of winners vs losers and so tightly written.
so dang cool to have a family connection to make the awards personal! yay!
It will be fun and my mother is looking forward to it, too.
Wow Georgette! I am so impressed! Writing in your family must be contagious since you seem to have the knack as well. And even though he’s not in contention for this one I will be watching future ceremonies for his inevitable future awards! He is not only immensely talented, but he sounds like a kind and lovely man. How proud you are and should be to have him in your family,
His whole family is talented and he has a twin!
You must be very proud! We wil be watching the awards as well tonight. I love seeing people meet their goals through hard work and determination. Your relative seems like a fun and interesting fellow. I wish him more successes.
He is very interesting and observant. I must say he has taken risks, knows dry spells and he inspires all of us. If you listen to the bookstore youtube forum, he generously tells his experience and gives some valuable advice. I am heartened that those who recognized his talent, recognized not only his talent but who he is.
Your relative seems to be a very nice young man…very down to earth. I hope you enjoyed the awards!
I am.
How exciting, Georgette! I’ve seen Little Miss Sunshine at least 8 times. It is the essence of funny. And, I laughed and cried watching Toy Story 3 the first time, second and even third. What an amazing story. I think it’s the best!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this. From LMS to TS3 I’m in awe of his versatility. The real excitement was 2005 when he was nominated for the Golden Globe and then the Oscar. We were so happy for him that all his years dedicated to film were paying off. His success did not come over night, although to some it may seem so. So when the awards season kicks off with the GG, we follow, acknowledge his passion and cheer.
After reading your third sentence, I immediately thought: you were sitting on your posterior for your posterity. You can call this your Olive Hoover comment, different from everyone else’s.
Oh noooo! and LOL…thanks for pointing that out…but do view the clip about the creation of Spanish buzz. It’s not quite a candidate for your Spanish-English blog, but you may find it interesting re: pop culture. I love it! So I take it you have seen LMS?
Yes, we saw Little Miss Sunshine a couple of years ago. I didn’t initially remember it well, but the last of your links brought it back to mind.
What a memory to remember the name of Olive Hoover.
I wish I could take credit for such a superb memory, but one of your links included a clip from the movie, and in that clip the name Olive Hoover came up several times.
It must be so much more special to know someone who is involved in the film process.
I’m just so happy for him that he is busy — very busy — doing what he set out to do.
I remember your telling me about him – can see how the awards would mean that much more to you & your family – writing must run in y’all’s genes as you certainly are great with words yourself!
Thank you, Patrice. Loved the photo of you and friends on fb yesterday.
Love, love that movie!!! It’s very difficult to write good humor, too. Thanks for sharing this sweet story. I must have re-played that last dancing scene 100 times!
100 times?!
How exciting to have someone like that in your family! You have such an interesting family anyway, he just adds another dimension.
Isn’t that clip exciting, so full of the “right stuff.” You know I have been given so many experiences and opportunities, sometimes I just wonder what someone else could have done with them. ooo…I do feel a responsibility to record, document and process. I have grown in this blogging experience to not hide or hoard these experiences, but put them out there to find out where it leads. I would never want to name drop, boast, etc. These experiences have figurative value, not just literal. I am grateful to the bloggers, so non-provincial, who nudge and encourage–that word again–me to process, to take it down a road I want/need to explore. Thank you for your comments today, Susan.
Such an amazing talent that inspires so many. I hope and pray that soon he will get an award although we already know he is a winner in his own right for the wonderful things he does.
He has one Oscar under his belt, was nominated for another. Let’s see what happens next year.
I am a fan for sure.
Wow Georgette it must be thrilling to watch the Oscars when one of your relatives has been nominated! No wonder your Mum doesn’t want to miss a second and is prepared to watch 24 hours in advance
I loved the movie “Little Miss Sunshine” – amazing that he won the Oscar for his first screenplay!
His versatility is amazing…LMS to TS3 and recently he has worked on the adventure Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
