When my grandmother took the train to earn her teaching credential, she left my mother with her father...Grand Dad, my mother calls him today as she remembers. From what I can gather he was a very cranky soul, so growing up as a teenager was a very difficult time for her for so many reasons. It seems more young people than we know lost one parent or another during those depression years. I can imagine the stories your mother told you of how they made it. We were constantly reminded of the struggles they endured after her dad died...it certainly put things in perspective for me. I didn't dare whine, complain or make any trouble as my mother constantly reminded us what "real problems" are. No, I never turned a deaf ear to her stories...they were sobering and real.
What a dear pitcher you described. Such a familiar sight on the table I'm sure is missed by you and the very thought of ST probably conjures the memories.

I can't believe how much the House on Baldwin looks like my grandparents' house. They didn't have a second story, but that porch is just right, down to the placement of the pillars and the big window.

I love the story of your mother plucking cherries from her window. I had to go outside and climb a tree to get mine! We didn't have those luscious sweet cherries or bings, though. Ours were sour, pie cherries, but they still were just fine for eating. More than once I had to fight off the robins to get my share!

My mother's mother died when Mom was sixteen, and she had to finish raising her sisters. From what I gathered from her and my aunts, my grandfather was, shall we say, less than fully dependable, or at least not highly motivated. But they made it through, as so many did.

Mom never had a Shirley Temple doll, but there was a cobalt blue glass Shirley Temple milk pitcher that always was on their table. It survived, too, and Mom had it for years. My aunt begged for it and I finally gave it to her - although I really do wish I still had it. ;)

Cherries in TX are a luxury, I think. My sister-in-law always seems to have some on hand. When GS comes to visit, I should be sure to have some on hand. I know he loves grapes, so I think he would like cherries...then I can tell him about great grandma picking cherries from her tree...I may leave out the part about 2nd story window...don't want to give him ideas. (wink)

Thank you, Patti. I do hope the family will keep them close and remember. As I already mentioned, GS1 who is turning 10 very soon will spend part of the summer with us. I'm so curious to see, if I show him the site what he may choose to read about. Of course, I'll show him the ones about him first. I hope by reading, he will know how very special he is.

Thank you for the lesson. Yes, I have folks pronounce it the "other" way...it would take me a minute to figure out what they were referring to as you and I are so familiar with its correct pronunciation.
I would love to write a YA novel...perhaps The House on Baldwin Street will take shape. I appreciate so much any writing encouragement or ideas, Monica. I had never considered writing about Spokane, but as much as Mom talked about it...there's much more to "mine" from her memories.
