Susan Utley, at Creative Procrastination chose a piece of “flash fiction” I wrote to feature on her site on Friday, August 19. I had a memory. I wrote
it in Word. I did a word count and voilá it > 100 words. “Is that what flash fiction is?” I wondered. So, I submitted it to her and to my amazement she asked if she could feature it. I was inspired by a postcard on her site and a memory. So today as I post my bi-weekly piece I direct you here to visit her wonderful site.
Susan first caught my attention with her FP article “When Green Was Just a Color.” I loved it from start to finish identifying with every word, her every sentence…and, her rural setting. I began to visit her site and found everything from a well-researched article on Dr. Seuss to how she almost blew the house up. From the Dr. Seuss article, I learned Dr. Seuss and my brother have something in common. He could have told me that…but I’m a sister, I don’t listen to everything my brother says.
She’s an author with publications to her credit. I visit Susan because I think I can learn from her.
I like Susan as I like all my daily reads. I think what all my blogging friends write is good, delicious, thoughtful, heartfelt, informative, humorous, wise and even brilliant. Oh, let me count the ways. Thank you!
I am so glad my little FP article caught your attention! To think we may never have met! Chance meetings are what makes life so full of surprises! Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to share your fiction with Creative Procrastination readers. You have a gift Georgette!
Yes…chance meetings!
Thanks for sharing, Georgette!
lol…I think I’m blushing…yes, I actually pushed submit. Thank you for reading.
That’s great news!
Thank you to Susan who so graciously accepted it. And, lucky for my readers…the usual 1,000 words is exactly that…a flash.
Georgette – I loved it! What a wonderful and full story told in a mere 100 words. Well done, Ms. S! Well done!
I thought it was a fun exercise and came up with another within a few minutes. It offers variety with fewer words. Thank you for reading and commenting, Lenore Diane.
Well deserved, Georgette! You bless your blogging buddies too, you know, especially me! 🙂
Thank you for reading and leaving such a sweet comment. It’s fun to meet other blogging friends who challenge us to experiment and develop other ways of expression. For another example, your Wordless Wednesdays are beautiful. I’ve become more mindful of taking my camera and going through files to look for the perfect picture. Have a lovely weekend.
It truly has been a blessing communicating with blogging buddies and yes, I completely agree that they challenge us to experiment and definitely encourage us to do so. Thank you for your kind words about my Wordless Wednesdays posts! I’m a visual person so pictures really captivate me and when I noticed another blogger doing ‘Wordless Wednesday’ I knew I had to try it too.
Thanks for sharing Susan with us. I liked what I read and subscribed to her blog. 🙂
Did you notice Susan has been blogging since 2005?
Congrats, Georgette!! I’m still out of town but had 5 minutes Internet access and am thrilled to hear your news!
Thanks, reeling. It was so nice to receive encouragement from Susan.
Enjoyed very much the writings of your friend. Her memories are very clear and very appropriate to be reminded of in this day and age. Yes, your brother and Dr. Seuss do have a link. It’s not unusual to be unfamiliar with events within one’s own family.
After reading your piece, I can see why Susan decided to feature it. Well done. You captured the essence of a story in so few words.
Thank you for reading and commenting. You may want to try one yourself and push “submit”. 🙂 I had read about “flash fiction” on another site, then I thought I’d try one. Susan is taking submissions. Just wondering…from what I remember in reading yesterday, are you a teacher, too?
Yes, I taught English for years in NEISD (North East ISD in San Antonio) before I became an academic dean for the district. Where in Texas are you?
Houston. I was in Spring ISD (not Spring Branch) for 33 years and presently teaching 2 courses a semester since retiring in 2007 at Lonestar Community College. I love San Antonio! I took several courses at Trinity and participated in the AP Spanish Language reading for several years before it moved to Cincinnati. So you moved from Texas to the East?
Susan is fabulous. And I plan to use her “green” piece in my classroom this year! Yet another thing (person) we have in common!
Thank you for visiting. Susan has been so sweet and so helpful recommending another site where I can try submitting things.
Are you in the path of this storm? Rochester?
