We had company this past weekend, both daughters, son-in-law and our two grandsons. When Dor from Virginia Views posted this salad recipe, I knew I was putting it on the menu along with the steak and potato salad. Check her recipe out, “A Magical Mandarin Salad.” I loved the last line of her recipe “Serve in a pretty salad bowl and mix at the table.” So I looked for a pretty bowl, one that would be different and unfamiliar, one that would surprise every one and remind us of Grandma K’s presence at the table. I decided on this one!
Then we mixed it at the table and it became this. Thank you, Dor. It was delicious and magical.
The smallest one at our table didn’t eat the salad. But he did play with this train set and these blocks from when Papa was his age.
And he played with these.
Thank you Roan for hosting.
oh, LOVE the old toys!!! love!!
Aren’t they wonderful? Whereas we have new toys with missing pieces and I can’t tell you the number of sets of glasses we have broken, it amazes me we have all these pieces and the bowl is still intact. Treasures.
I remember that little wagon with the wood pieces! The bowl is beautiful with a lovely history and I am going to check out the recipe for the salad. Love that your smallest grandson was playing with that little wooden train.. very sweet and nostalgic. That’s how it should be out on the farm. Reminds me of being at my Grandad’s farm.
You remember that wagon set of blocks. I’m trying to figure out what “H” stands for, probably the makers of this set. You should try out the salad and send home leftovers with your guests. It feeds a tribe.
I remember a little wooden wagon with blocks but I don’t think it was that old. I think I had one or one of my cousins had one with the regular alphabet blocks that fit in a little wood wagon. But it was still pretty old.. I am 62! I need to google. I am going to try the salad out at our September BBQ with the family!
Nope, I came back to look and I have memories of your little wood wagon with odd shaped wood pieces.. hmmm.
I’m thrilled we have all the pieces. I remember a smaller wagon of blocks my parents brought home from Germany for our girls. I remember they were highly polished and very colorful…alas though, some of those pieces have disappeared.
I am so glad you actually made the Mandarin Salad Georgette and thank you so much for the pingback! I am beyond thrilled. 🙂 And I love your RubbishTuesday post. Aren’t the old wooden toys the best? Anyway, I may do a Wasted Wednesday. 🙂 or a Tuckerd Out Thursday.
I’m just now responding. Thank you for the inspiration on two counts: the post which I enjoyed putting together, and the smiles it gave me on returning-to-school Tuesday.
Perfect pictures and a lovely take on Rubbish Tuesday! The salad looks delightful!!!
The salad was perfect: seeds, fruit, beans, and ranch dressing which is a favorite. It rounded out the menu perfectly.
Sorry, I missed your radio chat yesterday. Yesterday was my first day back to the college for meetings, etc.
I love old wooden toys, growing up is so over rated. Tom The Backroads Traveller
Thank you for stopping by.
So special!
It was a special time. And the salad had fruit, crunchy sunflower seeds and yummy beans.
Oh, I love the wooden train and blocks! How great that you still have them.
I’m amazed we have all the pieces after all the years and that the bowl is in one piece. Thank you for stopping by. Do check out the recipe.
What a beautiful old bowl: I’d probably be afraid to use it! And I love the wooden toys – sounds like a wonderful weekend there on the FARM.
Thank you, Dianna. We did have a wonderful time celebrating being altogether for the first time since we moved in and SIL’s b’day.
Leave it to Dor to come up with a recipe that’s not only pretty to look at, but delicious!
That recipe with all the different ingredients had something for everyone. And that last line about serving in a pretty bowl just round out the menu.
LOVE the old Toys and that beautiful bowl made my misty — my Grandma had a few shaped like that – so whimsical, they just beg to come out of the cupboard and party!! 🙂
Fun post, MJ
Awww…A good vinegar bath in the kitchen sink spruced her up and made her gleam. We did have a fun party, MJ.
wonderful!! MJ
P.S. that bowl inspired me to take another look at our local Salvation Army or Goodwill store – oftentimes they have pieces like this one in the back/kitchen area. Someone’s Grandma’s house got cleaned out and …. I have some neat pieces I’ve purchased over the years (pickle dishes etc) and your bowl makes me long for one like my Grandma had. I’ll let you know if I find it 🙂 MJ
Sounds like a fun way to go browsing. Let us all know what you may find. There are finds to be found. One day, little MJ will say, “That was my grandma’s bowl.”
I still love to play with building blocks…you get to do that when you have grandchildren.
You bet, Rose.
The only doll I still have is my Raggedy Ann, and the only toy I have left is my set of — building blocks! But I don’t remember ever having wooden blocks. I had wooden pull toys instead — my favorite was a duck.
ahhh…Raggedy Ann with the flower petal sewn under her heart, at least that’s what my Dutch grandmother told me. I think my sister has her now.
These were my husband’s blocks. My mother has our building blocks cut and sanded by Don Francisco, the handy man who met my parents’ servicing needs in Mexico. She stores them in a bottom drawer of her Ethan Allen dinette set “for the grandchildren.” DF made so many we could make a tower, then one by one deconstruct it by carefully dumping one block at a time through its center until crash, it all tumbled down sending us squealing.
I’m glad I took this picture this weekend. On Monday my husband took the train and other toys to a young teacher we know who sent an appeal on facebook for toys, items that could be sorted by shape and color and the ever popular construction paper. We just can’t keep all this stuff and we know the items will be used regularly.
My son had blocks like these. Fond memory! I LOVE the bowl you chose. It looks very nice with the salad. Thank you for l inking up!
Thank you for hosting, Roan. This meme inspires me as we move into this ole place where the old meets the new.
Those wooden toys and train set are classics. They look well worn and loved. And what a terrific bowl you used for the salad. Very fancy, indeed!
I’m amazed we still have all the pieces, but curiously “Wynken’s” name slipped??? off. How did that happen?
Those are great toys. What a lovely bowl you found for your salad.
I passed up mine and found this one that had belonged to my mother-in-law. I think I will be using it again.
More happy memories made out if an “ordinary” day … a salad made special by a cherished bowl & extra special treasures for the little one. Home – you make it so special.
Thank you, Patrice. Quite a compliment from someone who cherishes her home.
Those are awesome antiques! Uniquely different.
Thank you, McGuffy Ann.
