Cincinnati invites you to walk the city. From our hotel we could walk to the riverfront and take the Purple People bridge to Newport, Ky on the levee. We walked to the Freedom Center, Cincinnati Reds stadium, the Bengal’s stadium next to the Freedom Center, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Taft Museum. Around 7:00 PM we would walk to Graeters at Freedom Square for ice cream. The raspberry chocolate chip is wonderful.
On the way to all these sites we laughed and smiled at the pigs on display around the city. They are whimsical sculptures made of fiberglass. Back in 2000 about 400 designs were created and placed around Cinci and northern Kentucky to celebrate Cincinnati’s legacy as the pork capital.
About 100 of them are being brought back to decorate the city as Cincinnati welcomes the World Choir Games, July 4-14 at the Duke Energy Center and many other venues around the city.

definitely whimsical! Thank you for the tour 🙂
MJ
I had my eye out for as many as I could find. It made for a fun scavenger hunt. Happy 4th!
Gotta love a city with a sense of humor : )
These brought a smile every time we spotted one!
Enjoy your stay in our city! … and thanks for the pigs collection. 🙂
I have enjoyed it for the last few years. You have a great “walking” city with surprises just around every corner not far from each other. These pigs are the ones I walked upon at Freedom Square, but there are more all around the city and even Northern KY.
adorable! love when cities do this. dallas did pegasus a few years back. 🙂
I want to look up the cows of the “cow parade” now. And, I do want to check out Pegasus, too.
Sowy, sowy night. That cracked me up. Great pictures, Georgette. Thanks for sharing.
I loved the back of this one, and somehow completely forgot to get the front of him…truly, his back told the story best. They were all so cleverly done. I’m so glad you enjoyed them.
I love Cincinnati!! It was good to spend time with you. Great blog.. Patty
Wasn’t it memorable? I wish for one more trip next summer, Patty. Happy 4th to you and yours. Hope Tony had a safe trip meeting up with you all.
Amazing sights & sounds you’ve witnessed during this trip – these pigs remind me of the decorated cows around Houston, esp during the rodeo!! Glad you’ve had such a good time.
Great time it was! Come join us at the lake Thursday or Friday…just let us know what works best for you if you can make it. Happy 4th to you and your family today!!!
Crazy pigs — so fun and whimsical. Thanks for sharing them with us!
I have an apb amongst friends and colleagues to send me more as they run into them. These are the ones we walked by, but I know there are so many more. Each one was so clever tying its theme to its name. I am glad you enjoyed them.
This made me smile. I love that first pig the most, kind of Blues Brothery.
haha…he is a bit like that. I had to catch him from the side where he was wearing the blue tooth.
Love the pig parade. Our city has dolphins around town, and neighboring Norfolk has mermaids. Quite fun!
So fun to know about your dolphins and mermaids, Patti. Texas has the cow parade and in fact I got several of them for my MIL to place among her knick-knacks. I just couldn’t resist “collecting” these pigs on camera.
Hi Georgette,
I don’t know when you got back but nice to see you’re blogging again. Happy 4th!
I’ve never been to Cincinnati. Thanks to you I now know that as well as being the pork capital, its also a walking city.
I have something for you at my blog
Rosie, thank you so much for the amazing gift you worked to give and make possible. You simply take my breath away. I think I may print, frame and keep it at my desk for inspiration. In response to the question on the t-shift, thank you again. How interesting that after your great walk, you read in this post about Cincinnati being a walking city and that it should resonate with you. You inspire me to make and want to make more walks…the backbone trail and now Santiago.
Cows in Calgary, Snoopy statues in the Twin Cities, mermaids and dolphins and piggies, oh, my! Are the cows still in Houston? I thought that was a traveling exhibit and that it had moo-ved on. 😉 I see there was an auction in Austin last year of some of the cows – I’m just all confused.
In any event, your photo essay is delightful. I especially like the Van Gogh look-alike, and the very whimsical “A Cut Above”. I think it’s time to post again about another Houston-area collection of critters. Do you know where (and what) they are?
It’s so nice to have you back. Your posts always are a delight – and my view of Cincinnati is changing pretty quickly!
I can’t tell you what it means to me that you enjoy these posts and walk away with some thing new from them. Yes, it seems this “pork” post has raised a lot of questions. I wonder where the cow parade has gone? I wonder what other cities/states do similarly? I will have to do what you do so well–research. Your writing is always in the back of my mind. “Now Linda would fill up this basketball and give it more bounce,” I think to myself. Yes, I feel a follow-up on the cow parade may be in the offing. You spur me on to find out more, research more and make it all connect. And btw, I have just a few more photos of Cincinnati I feel compelled to share. Always, thank you for your encouraging comments.
Love it! During 2008 (or was it 2004) similar structures of donkeys and elephants were found all around Washington. It was fun.
So glad you are back to posting, Georgette. I missed you.
Elyse, I am so glad you enjoyed these porky pigs. I know I would have loved those donkeys and elephants, (wink) in no special order except alphabetically. I’m glad to be back too, Elyse.
PS I am so glad we have the Olympics–like the World Choir Games and the Pig Gig–this summer besides these political conventions.
Thank you so much for this deswine tour! I have giggled my way through your entire post. Bless all of those creative minds who can help us to see the world through new eyes!!
Smiling…that’s the spirit…”deswine” tour. I’m so glad you enjoyed them. Each one is so different, aren’t they?
Thanks for taking me on this whimsical tour. It’s quite impressive for a city to place 100 pigs (and even 400 in the first place) all around. My first thought was; why pigs? But then I guess it’s just a sense of humour and wanting to play around with various ideas around pigs. Anyway fun it is. (And by the way sorry for having been absent lately, I just haven’t had time to comment the last couple of weeks).
I am glad you enjoyed these works of whimsy. Although, I was gone the month of June, I did follow your African series. Very serious work, Otto. I’m always honored that you come visit thereby encouraging me to express what I see. These were very easy to photograph in relation to what you capture in your photos. Through your lens you capture depth, textures, geopolitical, sociocultural and economic truths without preaching and I don’t take for granted how difficult it is to achieve that. I am honored that you dropped in to comment.
Why pigs? Apparently, Cincinnati is a capital of pork and ham production and the citizens are simply and pridefully having fun with their title and name of “Porkopolis”.
Thanks for updating my knowledge about Cincinnati. And thanks for the lovely words. Really an encouragement.
I like that about our community–mutually encouraging.
Lovely Piggies, so much fun!:)
So glad you enjoyed them. Have a lovely weekend.
Thank you, you too:)
The most colorful, festive, fun pigs that I have ever seen. Such a joy to see each creation. Art with humor. Art that makes one feel good and optimistic. Have a great weekend my friend.
I am so glad you found these and enjoyed them. The moment I saw them and photographed one after the other, I just new I had to share them with my blogging friends. 🙂 You too, have a wonderful weekend, friend.
